John Marion McWhorter was born in Hot Springs Arkansas about ye ar father Andrew ,moved the family along with his father John, in 18 50 to Co. Texas.John's brother Andrew(John's son Andrew was named for mov ed to this site earlier.In time all the br others except George Grey McWho rter would move to the Grimes,Madison Co. area of East Texas. Marion met h is wife-to-be Nancy while the family lived in Madison sister Sarah would later marry Nancy's brother William Moseley,a nd John's father Andr ew died,Sarah would take care of one of her young er ,Jane. My Uncle Hiram told me(G.H.McWhorter) that once his father Jo hn McWhorter told him that when he was younger,he was riding a horse do wn small road,when two men stepped out of the brush co ver at the si de of and told him to get down off the horse,that "It is time for us to re membered that the horse would jump when he was heeled in the flanks, heeled the horse and he knocked both of the men down.John looked b ack, of the men wa s still down and the other was shaking his fist at John .I know how old John was at this time or where he was.The men could have r eturning Confederate soldiers or Yankee Carpetbaggers.Some time later h is father had died I think)John moved to So uth Texas around was the re in 1870 with his wife Nancy,a young son (William) and his Martha. Jo hn would later move to Wilson Co. (next county to the East), later to Gonzales Coumty. He moved to find work.John was ,wh at we a 'sharecropper".A s far as I know He never owned any property.The re paper filed in Gonzales Co.Tx. that gave John the position of Legal ov er his six children,after Nancy died.This cost him a $300.00 great de al of money in those days.I do not know why he wanted t o do unless his ch ildren was due some kind of inheirtance.I know that my Albert McWhorter to ld me once that his father had said that he did not any of his so ns to be doctors or lawyers.John remarried later to a named Mrs. Mathil da Simpson. Sh e died in childbirth with the child( a boy).1882, John marr ied Hannah Elizabeth Gilmore,and they had children. Two boys died at an ea rly age but the other grew up and had children of their own.Uncle Hiram sa id that his father said "You only s on to stay with me until he was twenty one years old".At that had four younger sons.John moved his family to Melo n(near Pearsall there was where he died of a kidney infection.He was on ly 63 yrs buried in the SandHill Cemetery,near Pearsall, Tx..This had be en a Saints Cem.,and my father Albert,said that his father was a member .I been able to prove or disprove this.I was told by several uncles that h ad branded several hundred calves and turned them loose on the Frio River. The b rand was a Half Moon.I have found no record of this never owned a ny real property that I could discover.He made his from place to place a nd working crops.Today we call this called it renting land
