General:

Hamilton Jefferson moved to Missouri from Kentucky with her parents in 1821 at age 12. Hamilton was one of the first settlers to make land entri es in the south central part of Missouri. At the time it was known as Pulaski County, later Kindrhook and then Camden County. He settled proper ty in Twp 36 North, Range 14 West near present day Lebanon, Laclede Count y, MO, in 1832.

Hamilton was elected a member of the legislature of the State of Missouri from Camden County, 1846-1847, as a Democrat. He supported his family as a farmer. He and several of his sons all joined the Confederate Ar my but little is know of his experiences in the war. After he was dischar ged from the army, he found that the Federals had burned his farm so he de cided to move to Jefferson County where three of his brothers were living. This was in 1864. They only stayed in Jefferson County a few years a nd then moved to Texas County in the vicinity of Houston, where they bo th farmed.

After Rebecca died in 1881, HJ married Mrs. Catherine Fisher in 1883. M rs Fisher was the mother of Joseph S Fisher who married HJ's granddaughter, Deborah Bell Frost.

HJ was a large man and enjoyed excellent health and physical strength until he died. He was 82 YO and was driving a team of 4 mules, sitting in a chair on top of a load of logs, when one of the wagon wheels struck a large rock and bounced the wagon, knocking him off. He broke his neck when he landed on the ground.
