General:

James became a United Presbyterian minister, and moved Cadiz Twp, Harr ison Co., Ohio by 1840. He lived in Sugar Creek Twp, Wayne, Co., Ohio, bei ng the pastor of the United Presbyterian Congregation of Dalton until Mar ch 1848. He moved from Salem to Cadiz, Ohio by Mar 1850, where he serv ed as a minister. He continued as a professor at Franklin College, New Ath ens, and lived in Athens, OH. He fell ill in the fall of 1851 and remain ed so for an entire year. (In 1845 he was offered the congregation in Alba ny, NY, but he refused.) After the death of his partner, Dr. Hannah, he re signed. He lived in New Athens, OH (1846-1857), president of Washington Co llege, Washington, IA, from 1859 until its destruction by a tornado in 186 4. He then became professor of languages at Monmouth College for ten yea rs In 1870 he lived in Vinton, IA, and retired there. He later mov ed to a farm. He lived in Monmouth, IL (1871-1877). In 1880 he was livi ng in Jackson Twp, Benton Co., IA.
James died 5 Nov 1881 of a stone in the bladder at Pratt Creek, Bent on Co., IA. He was buried in the Old United Presbyterian Churchyard in Pra tt Creek.
