General:
V. W. "Son" Cason, 89, of Fountain Hill, Ark., died Monday, Nov. 30, 2009. Mr. Cason was a native of Fountain Hill, having graduated from Fountain Hill High School in 1939 and the University of Arkansas. He was a high school math and science teacher and taught in Homer, Alaska, for 20 years. He was a Lieutenant with the 8th Air Corps, stationed in England, 834 Squadron, 486 Bombardment Group. He enlisted in the Air Force Reserve in September 1942 from Consolidated Aircraft in San Diego, Calif., and was appointed Aviation Cadet on March 20, 1943, at Santa Anna, Calif. He was assigned to the 398 Bomb Group at Rapid City, S.D., and had combat training in B-17s. He missed a flight that killed his crew, so he served as instructor until a vacancy occurred for combat. He served as Bombardier-Navigator for 35 missions over Germany. He was a member of the Hamburg Prairie Masonic Lodge No. 465 for many years and a member of the Fountain Hill First Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Luna Brown Cason; a sister, Annis Marie Eackles; and two brothers, Jack Brown Cason and Robert Earl Cason.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Elsa Raye Phillips Cason of Fountain Hill; three sons, Lynn Cason and wife Beverly; Jonathan Cason and wife Marissa; and Sam Cason and wife Jackie; all of Anchorage, Alaska; a step-son, Robert V. Lamar and wife Sheila of Rogers, Ark.; two sisters, Gladys Deckelman Lambert and Leone Hendrickson both of Monticello, Ark.; nine grandchildren, Samuel Lynn, David Jefferson, Maxwell Martinez, Jonathan Drew, William Galatin, Everett Fleming, Genevieve, Michelle Marie and Lindsey Rose.
Funeral services are 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, at the Fountain Hill First Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Flat Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Monday.
