Ashley County Ledger, 11/01/2003 - Mr. Sterling White, 95, of Fountain Hill, who was born September 20, 1908, in Fountain Hill, died Thursday, October 9, 2003, at the Drew Memorial Hospital in Monticello. A lifelong resident of Fountain Hill and a retired timber contractor, he was a member of the Fountain Hill First Baptist Church for over 75 years and a deacon for the past 58 years. He also served as Sunday School Superintendent and teacher, Training Union director and church clerk. He was the last living organizer of the Ashley County Baptist Association. He the caretaker for the Flat Creek Cemetery for many years and was an U. S. Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Marie Woods White of Fountain Hill; two sons, Charles White and wife Marie of Hamburg and Bill White and wife Gail of Texarkana; a daughter, Edith Thurman and husband Dennis of Fountain Hill; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Sula Griffin White; three brothers, Grover, Carl and Omer White; and three sisters, Jayne and Ailene White and Odelle Sivils.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 11, in the First Baptist Church of Fountain Hill with Revs. Bill Elton and Houston Austin officiating. Pallbearers were Steve, Stan, Jeff, Jeremy and David White, Bob and Dakota Timmons, Tim Kirchoff and Ed Sturmer. Honorary pallbearers were Bob and Gwain Sivils and Buddy White.
Burial followed services at the Flat Creek Cemetery with arrangements by Jones-Hartshorn Funeral Home of Hamburg. Memorials may be made to the Fountain Hill First Baptist Church or the Flat Creek Cemetery Association, both to P. O. Box 265, Fountain Hill, AR 71642.
