Notes
General:
James Avery Phillips, 95, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2023. James was born in Fountain Hill, Arkansas on April 1, 1928. James was a loving and devoted husband to his beautiful wife, Maxine, for 70 years. He was also a beloved brother, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. After graduating Valedictorian of his high school class, James enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving as a Corporal. Upon completing his military service, James attended the University of Arkansas where he earned his degree in Business. He then embarked on a successful career in retail. James was a big fan of all Houston sports teams and, of course, the Arkansas Razorbacks.
He enjoyed golf, puzzles, and sweets of all kinds. He deeply cherished his family. He was the proud father of two children, Stuart Phillips and Lisa Phillips Gentry. Stuart's wife, Cyndi, and Lisa's husband, Craig, also held a special place in James' heart. As a grandfather, James radiated warmth and affection to his five grandchildren and their spouses. He took great pride in their accomplishments and never missed an opportunity to celebrate their milestones. As a great-grandfather to ten great-grandchildren, he reveled in their energy and zest for life. Faith played an important part in James' life, and he was a steadfast member of Second Baptist Church in Houston, TX. James will always be remembered for his unwavering love, gentle spirit, and commitment to his family and faith.
James is survived by his wife, Maxine Phillips; his sister, Gladys Lane; his son, Stuart Phillips, and his wife Cyndi; his daughter, Lisa Phillips Gentry, and her husband Craig; his grandchildren and spouses, Dustin and Mandy McCarver, Jarrod and Cindy McCarver, Chase and Katie Gentry, Hannah and Matt Bormann, and Brooke and Grant Lund; and his great-grandchildren, Lola and Axel McCarver, Ava and Quinn McCarver, James, Jonathan and Hallie Gentry, and Conrad, Ryker and Gentry Bormann.
A Celebration of Life service to honor and celebrate James' life will be held August 31st at Second Baptist Chapel on Woodway at 10:00 am with a reception following. Family and friends are invited to attend, offering their love, support and remembrances during this time of reflection and tribute. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Second Baptist Church in honor of James' memory. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the outpouring of love, prayers and condolences they have received during this difficult time. James Avery Phillips will forever be missed and never forgotten.
