General:

Mary Louise (McDowell) Frost, 4th child of James Columbus McDowell and Viola Alexander McDowell passed away March 29th at Fayetteville Veterans Home at the age of 92. She was born August 19, 1916 in Savannah, Georgia, where she later wed Howard H. Frost in 1936, whom she survived upon his death in 1957 in Benton, Arkansas.

During World War II, she and her children lived in Malvern while her husband served in the European theater. After spending the post-war years in Fayetteville while Mr. Frost recuperated from wartime injuries and completed his engineering degree at the U of A, the family lived in Benton until his death in 1957. Returning to Fayetteville in 1959 she continued to reside in the area for the rest of her life.

She is survived by five children: James H. Frost & wife Joanne of Little Rock, Boyd L. Frost & wife Sharalee of Salt Lake City, Utah, Betty L. Frost and Barbara K. Frost of Springdale, and Richard L. Frost of Plano, Texas. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

She was an active volunteer of Washington Regional Medical Center auxiliary for over 20 years, was an officer and member of the VFW auxiliary in Benton, worked in PTA and church groups, and was a perennial volunteer at voting places in Fayetteville for many years. She was on the building committee of Rolling Hills Baptist Church in Fayetteville; initially a mission of the Emmanuel Baptist Church where she was a long-time member. She had a career of many years managing foodservice operations in both the Fayetteville public school system and at the University of Arkansas.

One of her earliest memories was riding with her family in her father's open car through the streets of Savannah celebrating the Armistice which ended World War I. After recuperating from his wartime injuries, her husband pursued his degree from the University of Arkansas where she became an active leader in both married students' organizations and the local PTA. After his death in 1957 she finished raising her five children on her own, while pursuing her career in foodservice. She was widely known for a wonderful, loving, giving heart and a great sense of humor. During her retirement years, the source of one of her greatest joys has been her many grandchildren.
