[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 1, Ed. 1, Tree #1953, Date of Import: Feb 26, 2002] James Daniel Geddie and his wife, Isabella McPhail came from Scotland some tine in 1772 and settled first in North Carolina. They travelled by ship with James' two brothers Thomas and John, and Isabe lla's two brothers, Dougald and Daniel, and a number of the family of Maxw ells. They set sail for the Cape Fear District of North Carolina, to which ma ny Scotsmen had gone during the years between 1763 and 1775 King George III granted 150 acres and 270 acres and 50 acres to James in M ay and July of 1774. This is a part of the old land grants, records of whi ch are kept in North Carolina. These were Grants No. 569, issued July 2 2, 1774, entry no 248, entered May 19, 1773, in Book No. 22, page 429. His case No. was 1416. It was located adjoining his other land. By 1959, the decendants of James Daniel Geddie would fill a sheet of pap er 42 inches wide, and 60 feet long. He was a Planter as they were known in Scotland. In modern terms, a farme r. He, also, legend has it, knew the cooper trade. This would corrobora te the records that show James was decended from the Geddies at Morayshire, Scotland, the sailing ship builders, the coopers for fishers of the Riv er Spey and others, who needed barrels in which to ship their fish. James is the progenitor of most of the Geddies, if not all of them (exce pt those who descend from the slaves who took the name Geddie on being ma de free after the Civil War.) in the continental United States. James fought in the North Carolina militia during the Revolutionary Wa r. He is listed in Soldiers of North Carolina in the American Revolution compiled by the North Carolina chapter of the Daughters of the American Rep ublic. Testimony to this fact lies today in the vouchers in Box B-1, The Comptrollers Office, North Carolina State Archives, Voucher No. 1587 whi ch lists James Daniel Geddie, and indicates he was paid for his services. Although we know the names of his sons, and one of his daughters, there we re several other daughters whose names have been lost in history to matrim ony, with the exception of one, whose first name is not known, but the re is record she married Alexander McAllister
