General:

James was a Baptist minister, having been ordained in 1833 in MO. He atte nded Shurtleff College at Alton, IL from 1834 to 1837 and took a cour se in letters and theology. He returned to Washington County, MO, b ut in 1838 went to Kentucky, his native state, in Fayette County. He w as appointed collecting agent for the General Association of Kentucky Bapt ists and for 2 years he traveled around the state on horseback. He had po or health, but managed to build quite a strong reputation as a humble a nd sincere preacher.
